Auror Arrested for Use of Dark Magic

Last night, well-known Auror Michael Brocklehurst, 52, was taken into custody for the use of Dark Arts in the presence of Muggles. The spell in question, Sectumsempra- created by the late wizard and Hogwarts Headmaster Severus Snape with the effect of slashing through skin and muscle tissue, was performed on a crowded London street at approximately 8 PM and was directed toward a Muggle by the name of William Ashford, 44, with the intention of doing harm. Brocklehurst has claimed that his choice of spell was in no way intentional, but rather that he had panicked after a verbal altercation took a turn for the physical and Ashford moved to attack. When questioned, spectators – muggle and wizard alike – varied in their stories; it is not yet known for sure who attacked first. The event required a total of twenty Obliviators on scene; the collected memories have been taken to the Ministry and are currently in the process of being analyzed.
This arrest has brought the current problems with Muggle-Wizard relations into the public eye once again as the latest in a series of anti-Wizard attempted hate crimes, the last being the gruesome murder of two young Hogwarts students headed for Kings Cross Station, leaving London wizards to question what is ethically acceptable in the name of self-defence. Alden Cromwell, public representative from the Ministry of Magic, has released the following statement:
“We at the Ministry would like to remind everyone that the use of Dark Arts-related spells, curses and potions are- as they have always been- prohibited by law, under all circumstances. The use of such magic is a punishable offense and will result in immediate action by the Department of Law Enforcement.”
Ashford was not hurt beyond a few minor cuts on his arm and has been released from St Mungo’s after undergoing extensive memory modification. In the meantime, Brocklehurst has been officially charged with unlawful magic and is scheduled to appear in front of the Wizengamot on October 23rd. More information soon to come.
